Oklahoma's new gun laws go into effect November 1st, 2019. The big change everyone is talking about is House Bill 2597. It's known as the "constitutional carry" bill and was approved by Governor Kevin Stitt on February 27, 2019. It removes the licensing and training requirements for handguns to be lawfully carried, the "permitless carry" law. It does NOT change who, how or where you can legally carry.

So, what does that mean?

You can now (Nov. 1st) legally carry a firearm concealed or unconcealed, loaded or unloaded, without a permit in the state of Oklahoma. However, there are still governing rules that must be met.

To keep the governing rules of the "Constitutional Carry" statute a short read, I have left out some of the verbiage.

"The carry of a firearm, concealed or unconcealed, loaded or unloaded, by a person 21 years of age or a person who is 18 years of age but not yet 21 and is a military member, veteran, or has an honorable discharge, AND that person is not disqualified from the possession or purchase of a firearm under federal or state law and is not carrying a firearm in furtherance of a crime".

To read the full content, see Oklahoma Self-Defense Act, Title 21, Oklahoma Statues, Section 1272, "Unlawful Carry", #6. Please note the 2018 Self- Defense Act printed handbook, authorized by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), does not have #6.

If you choose to carry a firearm for self-defense, permit or not, learn how to protect yourself both physically and legally. Become the "Good Guy with a Gun".

Learn to be safe,
